tahoe

my family's tahoe timeline:

1954: my mom's grandparents built a cabin in rubicon on the west shore of lake tahoe
1976ish: my mom's dad and siblings decide to sell the cabin
1986ish: my mom and dad buy a cabin in rubicon on king george street
1992: my parents divorced and sold their cabin
1993-1998: my mom rented a cabin every year in rubicon so my sister and i could still go to our beloved beach
1998: while on the beach, a spark plug washes ashore into my hands. my mom is sure it is explosive and makes me hide it at the back of the beach so we don't all blow to smithereens. there is a tall, loud man on the beach everyone seems to call "captain mike". i tell my mom we should ask the ship guy since the explosive vessel at the back of the beach could blow any second. so we do. (it's not explosive, we don't all blow up... surprise there.) that man is mike, my mom's mike. two years later and they were together.
1998-present: we visit rubicon only now we stay at mike's cabin with his kids, our cousins, and a variety of interesting visitors over the years. it's small, there's only one bathroom with a baby pink mini-shower, but we love it. we sleep, eat, read, draw, watch movies, and go to the beach!

coincidentally, mike's cabin is right next door to my mom's grandparent's cabin! small world full of interwoven meetings of fate :) what's greatest is that we have pictures of my mom and aunt, my sister and me, and now little johnny as babies...all on the same beach in rubicon on the west shore of lake tahoe.

i love this beach and this particular shore of tahoe is my favorite. it's always so relaxing there and even though our cabin is perhaps too small for everyone's big personalities, it's always a glorious trip. i hope one day dan and i can bring our children to the same beach so they can smell the ancient redwood trees, feel the warm sand between their toes, and squeal from the freezing cold lake water.
